Perched on the far western edge of Australia, Perth flanks the Swan River at the base of Mt Eliza. Most gay and lesbian travellers will enjoy its low-key urban centre with few pretensions.
The best time to visit is October, during the annual Pride Festival. The city's queer life is peaking, the weather is fine, and the nightlife pumping. The Perth Pride Parade is the second largest night-time gay & lesbian parade in Australia, after Mardi Gras. The Pride dance party is a faaabulous way to spend a weekend, as is the mid-year Xcess dance party now in its 7th year.
Perth's wildflower season stretches from early September through to mid November, when the plains and hills surrounding the city are swathed in colour.
Summer here is long and hot: perfect for enjoying the clean beaches that stretch up and down the coast.
Perth has a strong and very friendly gay and lesbian community, despite Western Australia's legislative backwardness when it come to equal rights. But with the 2001 election of two lesbian state senators; as well as having a gay federal senator and a gay Perth MP, the times are a changing.
Head for suburb of Northbridge, not far from the city centre, if you want to be where the gay and lesbian action is. Here you'll find the gay and lesbian bars, restaurants, cinemas and cafes. The neighbouring suburb of Mt Lawley offers some good Bed & Breafast alternatives.
